This is necessary for Win95 to use the settings Descent 2 requires. Remember, Descent 2 requires 16 MB RAM to run under Win95.
- Descent 2 normally uses the PRINTSCREEN key to take screenshots of the game. If you wish for this key to function in the normal fashion, go to the Properties/Windows Shortcut Keys dialog. Make sure
the checkbox next to PRTSC is enabled. This will restore the Win95 default setting for this key.
- Disable any screensavers you have running. These will interrupt gameplay and possibly cause it to lock-up.
Save the file, and exit the editor. Run the Descent II setup program and select the VR device of Simuleyes. Run the STEREO.BAT (or STEREOLO.BAT) file to start Descent II.
If you are running Descent II from Win95, the following will make it easier to start the game with the stereo glasses:
Problem: My game pauses every few minutes. What is happening?
Solution: Experiencing pauses in a game while the CD changes tracks every few minutes is normal.
This happens due to a limitation of the MSCDEX drivers.
However, if your game seems to skip tracks about every 2-3 seconds, there may be an easy fix.
Most SCSI card manufacturer's have an update driver to fix this.
For people with Adaptec EZ SCSI, there is a file called UPGRADE.EXE available at http://www.adaptec.com.
Run the executable file and it should fix the problem.
Descent 2 uses Redbook audio (like normal audio-only music CD's)
which provides music straight through the CD instead
of synthesising digitized music through the sound card.
The limitation of redbook audio it needs to pause the game momentarily to change tracks.
This is normal and there is not due to a problem on your system.
To disable the skipping music, go into the options menu, and then go into the sound effects & music option.
From this menu, disable the Redbook audio music option.
Problem: My game is pausing/skipping alot. What is happening?
Solution: The problem usually happens when your CD-ROM drive is utilizing SCSI drivers. There is no known fix for this at this time. You may want to try and download the latest drivers for your
CD-ROM/SCSI card. Updated drivers may correct the skipping.
We would appreciate it if you could provide us with information about your system (particularly the SCSI card model and CD ROM model). A MSD report can help also. (Exit Windows completely. Type MSD from your DOS prompt. Go up to File/Print report. Under the choices of where to Print To: Choose File. It should save it as a filed called REPORT.MSD in the directory you are currently in.)
If you have an Adaptec EZ SCSI drive, download UPGRADE.EXE from HTTP://WWW.ADAPTEC.COM. Run the executable file and it should fix the problem.
To disable the skipping music, go into the options menu, and then go into the sound effects & music option. From this menu, disable the Redbook audio music option.
Problem: Boot Disk for Descent 2
Solution: Making a bootdisk for DOS-4GW Games:I highly recommend printing out a copy of your autoexec.bat and config.sys in advance. You will be able to refer to it for adding your sound, CD-ROM and mouse lines. To do this, go to File/Run [Win95 - Go to Start/Run] and put in the command line:
SYSEDIT
Go to File/Print and print out both the autoexec.bat and config.sys. You may need to click on its title bar to bring a window on top to print it. When you exit, make sure you answer NO if it asks you to save the file.
If you do not want to make a bootdisk by hand, you can download a bootdisk maker called, STONBOOT (works for both Stonekeep and D2). Stoneboot is compatible with Win95 and DOS 5, 6 and 7. You can find it on any of our support sites.
If you are not sure on the lines to include in your autoexec.bat and config.sys, try STONBOOT.EXE or paste your autoexec.bat and config.sys into an email to us. You can cut and paste them in SYSEDIT (instructions on Sysedit in the first paragraph). Please do not attach your system files to an email, paste them within the body of the letter.
These instructions are assuming you are using MS-DOS 6.
Special changes or instructions for Win95 are in {Win95- } if needed. {Win95- Shutdown and restart in MS-DOS mode}
1) Insert a disk into drive A. (Must be drive A, not B) 2) From the C prompt, type:
FORMAT A:/S
3) Switch to the A:\> prompt, type:
A:
4) Make a A:\CONFIG.SYS, type:
C:\DOS\EDIT A:\CONFIG.SYS
{Win95- C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EDIT A:\CONFIG.SYS} 5) Put the following lines in the screen:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH
BUFFERS=30
FILES=45
(Place your Sound Card line(s) and CD-ROM line here. Here are some sample lines from a Creative Labs CD-ROM and sound
card. Yours will be different and may start with DEVICEHIGH):
DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220 I5 D:1 H:5 DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTMMSTS.STS
DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\SBCD.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
6) Save and exit the editor.
7) Make an A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT, type:
C:\DOS\EDIT A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
{Win95- C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EDIT A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT} 8) Put the following lines in the editor screen:
@ECHO OFF
PATH C:\;C:\DOS;
{Win95- PATH C:\;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;}
(Place your Sound Card, CD-ROM's MSCDEX and Mouse lines here. Here is a
sample set from a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16. Yours will be different and may start with a LH):
SET SOUND=C:\SB16
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S
C:\SB16\SB16SET /P /Q
C:\WINDOWS\MSCDEX.EXE D:MSCD001 /M:15 C:\MOUSE\MOUSE
{Win95- Do not put in all `REM - By Windows95 . . .' so that your lines start with C:\ or LH}
(If you downloaded a Microsoft mouse driver, copy the file onto your bootdisk and add the line below instead of the C:\MOUSE\MOUSE line above.):
A:\MOUSE
(Downloading and using an actual Microsoft mouse driver is highly recommended if your game is having strange problems, freezing or crashing.)
C:
PROMPT $P My bootdisk $G (optional)
CD\GAMES\DESCENT2 (or the path you installed Descent 2 to.)
To use the bootdisk, make sure you have exited Windows completely, Shutdown Win95 or the computer is off. Put the disk in drive A (must be drive A, not B) and reboot or turn on your system. When you are finished with the game, exit, remove the bootdisk and reboot or turn on your computer.
